(In case you arrive at this page via an Internet Search, click here to get to the CBI Project Homepage)

Follow the links to General training materials, or to Specific-Board training materials

Here are links to some of support materials for the Drumcondra Summer Courses: please feel free to use these (in not-for-profit courses under the auspices of NCTE and/or Education Centre) - as long as you acknowledge the source.

(It may be useful to right-click on the suggested links below and choose "Save Target as" rather than "Run" - this way you can check the downloaded file with your antivirus software before you open it). You can view the file formats below if you have MS PowerPoint or MS Word, or MS PowerPoint or MS Word Viewer, or Star Office (the latter is free to schools via your local ICT Advisor) or the open-source Open Office)

  • Course Introduction: this PowerPoint file starts with general Administration pointers, and then sets out the programme and rationale for the course: CBI_CourseIntroGeneral.ppt (145 KB .ppt file, 22 June 2007)

  • Use of Whiteboards - this PowerPoint file sets out the specific rationale for using whiteboards in the classroom, indicating the benefits for Teachers and for Students Why ICT and CBIs.ppt (188 KB .ppt file, 23 June 2007)
  • Desktop or CBI? Show me an example of something that works 'better' on a CBI compared with running the program on my PC and then projecting this via a Data Projector. There is a program called chimes.exe (my apologies in that I have not been able to find it on the Internte) ...you can download it from this cbi website: chimes.exe (466 KB file - this does not require an istallation; as an ".exe" file it just runs ..in this case it is a Flash file)
  • Tutor Guidelines - this Text document sets out some guidelines to Tutors as to how they may approach the teaching materials, and provides additional weblinks etc. Creating Digital Classroom Resources with a CBI - Notes for Tutors.doc (50 KB .doc file, 24 June 2007)
  • Who is likely to use ICT? click here to see Roger's Adoption-Innovation Curve (this image is taken from the SMART Notebook resource library). The image is also included in the 'Why' PowerPoint above
  • Inspectorate Comments: how do the Inspectors view the use of ICT in schools? Follow the link to read the relevant excerpts from the 2001-2004 Report: ExcerptsInspectorReport2004.doc (28 KB .doc file, 22 June 2007) The text is also included in the 'Why' PowerPoint above
  • Some whiteboards seem to have nore 'resources' than others. Are we limited if we choose one of the 'cheaper' whiteboard solutions? Not if you know where to find all the third-party, whiteboard-independent resources. Look, for example, at the Interactive Teaching Programs (ITPs) in Numeracy which are posted by the UK DfES (Department for Education and Skills) at http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/search/primary/results/nav%3A49918. Most of the resources are available in Flash format, and also in .exe format. I particularly like 'Fractions' for teaching equivlaent fractions
  • Coventry Learning Gateway has another selection of Numeracy ITPs at http://clg.coventry.gov.uk/... ...again these are all Flash-based for use on computer/whiteboard
  • Visiting and recording your visit to the Scoilnet (http://www.scoilnet.ie) website ...click here for the Template document (this document .doc will open in Word, Star etc.); for actual reviews of websites, click here to read reviews by the teachers on the SMART course.
  • Comparing and Contrasting the features of different CBIs. The following are useful also for a recap of the features at the end of the course: for SMART Board only, click here; for Promethean ACTIVprimary only, click here; for Cambridge-Hitachi only, click here ...You might want to right-click on the links and choose "Open in a new window" or "Save Target As"
  • What does a Flash file look like? Click here to see an example ('scooter' from the NCTE/RTE "Sci-spy" website)
  • Recap of coursework ...PowerPoint for SMART; last day of Promethean and Hitachi course click for recap (document)
